동사가 여러 층위로 나타난 경우

→ 힘이 있고, 자유로운 주체가 된다는 것은 무수히 많은 숫자의 커피의 향과 종류 사이에서 고를 수 있다는 것을 의미하는 것을 의미 하는 것이 아니라, 경제 체제에게 노동자와 환경을 착취하지 않고 존중하다록 요구할 수 있는 것을 의미한다.
위 문장이 독해하기 어려운 것은 여러 층위의 동사가 나타났다는 것이다. 주어에 대한 동사로는 means가 나타났고 그것의 목적어로 분사구문 being able to가 not A but B 구문으로 제시되었기 때문이다. 그 뿐만 아니라 그것의 목적어를 수식하는 관계대명사가 제시되어서 그 속에 동사 respect와 그것에 대응하는 삽입구 rather than exploits가 있었다.
이와 같이, 3단계의 층위로 이루어진 문장이기 때문에 독해하기 어려웠다. 그런데 같은 문법적인 기능을 하는 동사가 무엇인지 생각하면서 독해를 했다면 이해하기 쉬운 구문이었다.
